Welcome to the Ohio River Valley’s Regional page, from Mayor Fred Turkington, Mayor Sarah Paxton, and Director Sarah Gibson!

What is a region?
  •  Every JSA State is divided into Regions. A Region is much like what it sounds like: a portion of the whole state broken down into a more manageable geographic area.  Regions have their own set of conventions (Regionals) and, in the larger regions, a regional cabinet. The regions are used to form bonds between chapters that are close to each other and encourage activities on a chapter level. To assist the State leadership, Mayors and Vice Mayors (whose positions will be elected ones starting in Spring 2008) oversee each Region. The Mayors are part of the Expansion, Communication, and Chapter Affairs Department (ECCAD) and work closely with chapter presidents to make sure that each chapter is running smoothly, help to organize and advertise miniconventions in their regions, and plan the Regional conventions in conjunction with the State.  The Ohio River Valley is divided into three regions:  The Great Lakes Region, the Ohio Valley Region, and the Tennessee Valley Region.

  • The Great Lakes Region includes all of Ohio north of Columbus. It is the second largest of the ORV regions, and is headed by Mayor Fred Turkington of Avon and Vice Mayor Carl Shotwell of Medina. Its 21 chapters, including the two largest chapters in the state, are mostly centered around the cities of Cleveland and Akron.

  • The Ohio Valley Region includes all the area between Columbus and mid-Kentucky and is the largest in the ORV. The region is polarized between Cincinnati and Dayton, although more chapters are starting to grow around Columbus. The region is headed by Mayor Sarah Paxton of Badin and Vice Mayor Lisa Ramsey of Centerville.

  • The Tennessee Valley Region (TVR), overseen by the Tennessee Valley Director, is comprised of southern Kentucky and all of Tennessee.  For years now the stronghold in the TVR has been Dobyns-Bennet, a school whose leadership has helped to build up surrounding schools.  Though the Director position is not quite equal to a mayor, it has some of the same functions such as keeping in touch with Chapter Presidents and trying to spread JSA to new schools in the area.
